At fifty-one years
Theo Geisel one day
Published Cat in the Hat
For the children’s fun play.

Though no kids of his own
Nary three, one or two,
He wrote book after book
For our kids to read through.

Before this he wrote things
For adults all grown up
But they did not do well,
In fact you could say that they flopped.

William Spaulding stepped in
And said to him with a frown,
“USE THESE SPECIAL WORDS
IN BOOKS KIDS CAN’T PUT DOWN!”

So he wrote and he wrote,
Wrote
Wrote
Wrote
Wrote
And the kids ate it up,
Every last note.

Books came!
With flourish and style!
And that style made kids smile!

They read!
Their library now quite profuse
They read!
All his wondrous books
His named changed now to Seuss!

And he wrote for them,

In anapestic tetrameter with units of four,
In amphibrachic tetrameter for the Circus, and more!
Trochaic tetrameter brought a strong and a weak,
Then Iambic tetrameter reversed this with a tweak!

He drew his own pictures!
In pencil and pen,
A couple of fish, a Lorax and then,
A Sneetch , and a Zax and Sam-I-Am too!
The beloved Grinch and a city of Who’s!

This late bloomer did win
Awards and a prize!
Academy, Emmy, Pulitzer
No lie!
Hollywood Walk of Fame,
Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal too!
Then of course a Peabody
Joined his trophy zoo.

His work quite enriched us
As kids and adults.
So if you write, don’t give up
Or give in to smut!!!
